Obituary of Joel Gedeon
Dr. Joel Aneal Gedeon was born and raised in New York, NY. As a child, he was very inquisitive and enjoyed participating in chess tournaments, little league baseball, and soccer –when he wasn’t playing video games with his friends. A gifted student, he earned a full scholarship to St. Andrews boarding school in Boca Raton, FL, and while still very much his mother’s son, he left home at thirteen to take advantage of this momentous opportunity. After graduating, he attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada for two years, before choosing to be closer to family and graduating magna cum laude from SUNY Albany. Joel then went to medical school at St. George University in Grenada and was among the 2019 graduating class. During the COVID pandemic he worked as a medical scribe at clinics in Brooklyn, facilitating efficient care to the most at-risk patients in the borough. At the time of his death, Joel was in his final year of residency at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami. Joel was introverted and soft-spoken, but you would always see a smirk on his face whenever he made a clever joke. He had planned to dedicate his life to treating those with psychiatric issues and psychological trauma, knowing full well that those are often the most difficult wounds to heal. The pride and joy of his immediate and extended family, he was an example of what dedication and hard work can accomplish in America – a neighborhood kid from northern Manhattan, born to immigrant parents, who became a doctor. He died far too young, he will be deeply missed by his family, loved ones, and anyone who knew him well.
