My dearest and unconditionally kind cousin… I will never forget the day I first lay eyes on you; you looked up at me with the most wholesome and perfect smile.
I can’t recall ever seeing you not smile And now I will no longer hear your laughter or see your beautiful smile.
There is not one word that can truly describe you or sum up who you were. I don’t think that I have ever met someone like you or will ever meet anyone with your personality on this planet.
You were caring, quirky and always honest. Soft spoken and calming. You had a way of making me feel so at peace..you were soothing, I believe you may have made everyone feel that way.
Always so understanding and had a way of teaching others to be so without having to do so. You were sweet, funny and determined. We got lucky to have you.
Not once did I see you angry, mad or sad. Not as a child or as an adult. Never heard you say anything bad or about anyone. Hear you raise your voice or yell…not even singing when playing your guitar.
You were what I would describe as angelic…you had this overwhelming aura.
You are what everyone describes you as; yet uniquely indescribable.
I will miss you for the rest of my living life.

I first met Joel in the Alumni Quad cafeteria during my first year at SUNY Albany. Our group quickly became close that first week. I remember us all gathering and singing "Wonderwall" with Joel on guitar. Throughout those undergrad years, we became best friends and shared many memories.
Joel was a genuinely kind person who cherished the people around him. He had a natural curiosity about human behavior and a deep love for learning. He was consistently supportive and intelligent, though he remained very humble about it. He was always willing help, whether it was with studying for organic chemistry exam or working out a personal issue. Those moments captured Joel's essence: caring, supportive, and always ready to lend a hand to those in need. His presence made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Joel and I met during medical school and one of the first things I noticed about him was how he brought a sense of calmness. Q: How would you describe Joel to someone who had never met them?
A: Joel was someone who was quiet in a large group, but spoke openly when in smaller settings. He had such a contagious smile that could light up a room. He had an empathetic energy to him and was a very good listener. It was easy to sit next to him and find yourself opening up more than usual. When it came to work he always handled everything that needed to be done, without ever becoming stressed out. This was one of the most admirable things about him, that no matter how busy the day had been, no one had ever seen him stressed or anxious.
He had a very kind soul, was open to people from all walks of life, and did not judge or say anything negative about anyone.
He liked to go out to new places, to bars and restaurants and to hang out at social events.
Joel was a very spiritual person, believed firmly that we are all here on this earth to do good and help others, and that spiritual growth was a never ending journey.
Joel was a kind hearted, intelligent, calm and peaceful soul. Anyone who got to spend time with him was truly blessed.

I met Joel in high school where we were both resident students. He was such a joy to be around and always willing to help others without judgement. Ill always remember when a girl was injured and had to use a wheelchair for a few weeks, Joel took it upon himself to help her as much as he could and met her after her classes to take her where she needed to go, and then rushed to his own classes. He was the kindest person and we will never forget him.

Joel my wife and I (we weren’t married at the time) played Final Fantasy XIV together where he went by the name Smokin Faces! We had a blast together he taught me how to play several raids and was a great person. I lost touch with him over the years and am so sad to hear he is gone. He was such a great person and a good friend when I knew him.
My most found memory playing FFXIV with Joel was when he continuously (after many failures) helped me defeat the raid boss featuring Garuda but before we ended up completing the raid my wife had to go to bed. When she woke up she was mad at us that we had completed it without her but Joel and I had a great time doing it together!
He was an excellent virtual friend and I’m sure an even better friend in person. I know he must of touched many others with his kindness and great personality.

I met Joel as an intern during my family medicine residency. We spent many days working alongside each other. He was the most level-headed, calm person I met. My favorite memory of him was when we talked about how we like to spend our free time, and he told me he had started dance classes and loved learning new things. He believed that our self-limiting beliefs were the only thing stopping us from trying anything new. He was a good and kind man. I am grateful and blessed to have known him.

Juelz, I can’t believe it. We shared so many formative memories together at McGill—spending late nights up on Floor 15, sharing bands and listening to new music, or teaching me Dominican slang while I watched you play Halo Wars. Beyond undergrad, I’ll always remember your willingness to come out and celebrate birthdays and any other events with me when I visited New York. You were the first person I spoke Spanish with exclusively, and you taught me way more than just some new words for my vocabulary. I still listen to Muse and think of you every time—and always will.
