Obituary of Michael J. McGourty
Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On the evening of November 5, 2011 Mr. Michael J. McGourty left this
world knowing he had the love and respect of his three daughters; Anna,
Teresa and Eileen.
Michael was one of four born to Myles and Mary McGourty in Gubaveeny
Blacklion. Co. Cavan, Ireland. During the late 1950’s Michael traveled
via boat to New York and worked from construction sites to warehouses,
but eventually returned to where his heart lay; the farm of Gubaveeny,
Blacklion.
Michael loved to dance, have a drink and share in the laughter of good
company. It was said, “Michael was a better dancer…” and swept Frances
Dolan off her feet. They fell in love, were married and began a new
life as husband and wife. Their family began with Anna, the first of
their three daughters. Times were not easy living on the farm and
Michael knew that New York would allow a better future.
Michael, Frances and their daughter Anna ventured off to New York and
moved to Washington Heights. Michael started working with
M.A.B.S.T.O.A. The arrival of their second daughter, Teresa came along
with growing responsibilities. The opportunity as superintendent with
the assistance of his wife at Seaman Avenue came their way. Michael
continued to work away and the arrival of their third daughter, Eileen
came on a Halloween day. Michael enjoyed life and his family, but his
heart yearned to return to the farm.
In 1986, Michael returned to Ireland, gave back to the farm he loved so
much. He took great pride in the dogs he trained, the stock of sheep
and lambs produced and knowing he brought life back to the farm he was
raised on. Michael found comfort farming away, but felt again that
something was missing. His health began to deteriorate and Michael
returned to NY and eventually back to Seaman Avenue. In his last years,
Michael lived surrounded by his family and died with them at his side
with their love and respect.
