Obituary of Ida Bochakos

Ida M. Bochakos of New York City, passed away at age 90 on June 14th, 2012 At her request, no funeral was held. A memorial mass and celebration of her life will take place on June 30th at 11am at Mother Cabrini Chapel, 701 Ft. Washington Ave, NY NY. Born March 23, 1922 to John and Julia Scully, Ida was a beloved fixture in her Washington Heights neighborhood for over 60 years. Gregarious and friendly, “Dee” was active in the community. She worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and continued at her job at Mother Cabrini well into her 80’s. She was known for her quick wit and sharp mind, generosity of spirit, and willingness to help all who asked. A true icon, she knew everyone and everyone knew her. Her first-born daughter Diane preceded her in death at age 4. Ida was married to James J. Britt in 1951. They were active in Catholic Charities, were foster parents, and had four children of their own. Ida found the lasting love of her life in Ted Bochakos, marrying in 1975 and remaining with him until her death. She is survived by her husband Theodore Bochakos; children Mary (Britt/Ring) Egan, Susan (Britt) Tate, James G. Britt, and Gerard T. Britt; grandchildren Laura Tate, Eric and Tara Ring, and Aeron Britt. Ida will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew her, and missed by her family, friends, and the entire community that was touched by her wonderful personality and strong spirit. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
