Obituary of Bess Stanton

Bess Stanton lived her life with a quiet dignity and a love of family. She was surrounded by family when she passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 98 on 7/14/20 which was the 33rd anniversary of the passing of her husband, John. Bess touched many lives with her genuine care and her encouragement of others that brought out the best in people. She loved reading and tennis, which she played into her eighties. She was a long time resident of Rye and Harrison, NY where she was active in both communities. On February 21, 1942, she married the love of her life, John Stanton, and they were together for 45 years until his passing in 1987. Bess is survived by 2 children, Chris Stanton (Bobbi), Valerie Stanton Dahlberg (Michael) who live in Katonah, NY, 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, her sister Louise Gallagher, and many loving nephews, nieces and friends. Bess retired as Assistant Director of the Harrison Public Library after 26 years. With her husband John, Bess was a founding member of the Church of Our Saviour in Rye, NY. She served as the President of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, a philanthropic group; she was also on the Board of Directors at Greenwood Union Cemetery and the Milton Harbor House. Viewing will be on Friday at 11am at the Church of Our Saviour, 2195 Westchester Ave. Harrison, NY. The funeral will follow at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to the memory of Bess Stanton to the Church of Our Saviour (gocoos.org) or St. Jude Hospital (stjude.org). The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Bess' aides, Mellie, Deana and Maria for their devotion and compassion. Also, thanks to Calvary Hospice for their commitment and dedication, especially her nurse, Maggie. A Viewing for Friends and family of Bess will be at The Church of Our Saviour 2195 Westchester Ave East Rye NY 10580 Friday from 11:00 AM to 12 Noon with services to follow at the Church at 12.
