Please share a memory of Themistocles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Themistocles W. Calathes entered into rest on October 25, 2016. Beloved husband of the late Georgia. Dear father of William and Christine. Grandfather to Whitney. Born in Hell's Kitchen in the early 1920s, Themistocles often told stories about a past New York City where sheep grazed in Central Park Sheep's Meadow and where he could sell shopping bags for a nickel on Ninth Avenue. He was a proud veteran, serving during World War II and surviving the Normandy Invasion. A dedicated postal worker for over 40 years and later, an administrative assistant at Columbia University for 18 years. A proud Greek from the island of Lemnos, Themistocles was the oldest living graduate of the Greek American Institute as well as the most senior member of the Pan-Lemnian Society, a cultural organization his father helped found in 1921. Themistocles held an immeasurable sense of honor in his Greek identity, talking about his boyhood on Lemnos where the air was fresh and the ocean was cold. As a father, grandfather, neighbor and friend, he will be missed deeply. Service will be held on Saturday 9:30am at Zoodohos Peghe Church, 3573 Bruckner Blvd, Bronx, NY 10461. Visitation will precede the service at the church from 8:30am to 9:30am. Burial to follow on Monday 11:30am at Calverton National Cemetery.
