Obituary of Sophia Kideris Zepatos
Please share a memory of Sophia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sophia Kideris Zepatos of Newport Beach, CA, died July 20th, 2018 at the age of 97. She was born in New York City to immigrant parents, and spoke Greek until she enrolled in public school. Sophia graduated from Julia Richman High School, and worked at Macy’s as a personal shopper during WW II. She was designated “Miss Greece” during a War Bond drive in NY. She met her future husband, Spero Zepatos at a Greek community dance, and they enjoyed dancing together throughout their marriage of 56 years. She served as President of the Philoptochos Society of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, while Spero was President of the Parish Council and together they dedicated much time to Church activities. Sophia and Spero lovingly raised 4 children, Jerry, John, Thalia and Chris. Eventually their family would grow to include 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
While raising her family, Sophia owned and managed Jorie’s a women’s clothing store in Bronxville, NY, for more than two decades. Sophia was an excellent cook, and maintained a lovely home which was often filled with guests. They retired to Florida in 1993 and after Spero’s death, Sophia moved to Newport Beach to be near her children, and began a new life at the age of 82.
Sophia befriended and inspired many throughout her lifetime and believed in helping others whenever she could. Her legacy lives on in each of us.
