Obituary of Douglas Meiere Harding

Douglas Meiere Harding, 87, of New York City passed away on November 17, 2019 at Mount Sanai West Hospital in New York City after a brief illness. Douglas was born on June 23, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his father Wade Pitts Harding Jr., his mother Mildred Rebecca Meiere Harding and his brother Wade Pitts Harding III. Left behind to remember their loving brother are sister Gail Harding Grove and brother Steven Edward Harding, both of the Atlanta area. Douglas is also survived by nephews Michael Augustus Grove, Patrick Harding Grove, Brian Lumpkin Grove, Bradley Markham Grove, Tom Harding and nieces Mary Rebecca Harding, Millie Maria Gorman and Janice Elaine Harding along with numerous great nephews and great nieces.
Mr. Harding was a graduate of Grady High School in Atlanta. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served aboard the USS Tarawa (CV-40). Upon his Honorable Discharge, Douglas attended Auburn University where he received a bachelor’s degree in interior design. He was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity and was an avid Auburn Tigers fan. Douglas was a world traveler having worked as a travel agent for Delta Airlines, KLM Airlines and subsequently retiring from TAP Airlines.
Douglas was an active member of Saint Eleftherios Greek Orthodox Church of New York City and was given his new Christian name Panagiotis (Panos for short) at the time of his Chrismation on July 20, 1969. He enjoyed singing in the Metropolitan Greek Chorale for many years. Douglas was a history buff and was especially interested in his family genealogy. Douglas stayed active in his community and various organizations while his health permitted. He was a 32-degree Mason and a member of the following organizations: Independent Royal Arch Lodge No. 2, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The National Society Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims, The Plymouth Hereditary Society, The National Society of Old Plymouth Colony Descendants, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, National Society Sons of Colonial New England, The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, Military Order of the Stars and Bars, The National Order of the Blue and Gray, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Confederate POW Society.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to one of his favorite organizations.
Reposing at Saint Eleftherios Greek Orthodox Church, 359 W 24th St, New York, NY 10011 on Friday 10am-11am. Funeral service to begin at 11am. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
