Obituary of Michael Niles Whicombe

Michael Niles Whitcombe, classical saxophone performer, rested on February 21st, aged 50. Funeral service will be held at St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church on Monday 25, 2013 at 10:00 am with Father George of St. Spyridon’s officiating. He will be laid to rest at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Michael was born in Rochester, New York to Peter Booth and Nancy Phelan Whitcombe on May 18, 1962. He graduated from Fairport High school in 1980. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Music from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, after studying music for a year at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Michael was the founding alto saxophonist of PRISM Quartet and his artistry and vision shaped the quartet for over 20 years. Michael performed with his quartet in New York City’s Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Symphony Space, as well as, in every state and several countries around the world. Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Nancy. Michael is survived by his dear partner in life Antonios; aunt Elizabeth; brothers Nat and Nick; sister Anne; niece Sofia; nephews Dan and Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital for children with cancer. Michael’s partner wishes to extend his gratitude to Michael’s siblings and friends for their support in Michael’s final days.
