Obituary of Kay Mitsos
Please share a memory of Kay to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Kay Mitsos was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. As a young woman she married John Mitsos while he was serving as an army sergeant during World War II. They settled in Brooklyn and later moved to Dobbs Ferry, NY where she lived for 59 years. From 2013-2020 she resided near family in northern New Jersey. She remained proud of her Brooklyn roots and continued to visit family, shop and attend church there for many years after she moved away.
Kay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, and an active parishioner in the religious and cultural life of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Yonkers, N.Y., where she had also served as a Sunday School teacher. Her family, church and Greek heritage were everything to her. She loved reading and traveling, Greek dancing and celebrating holidays with family. She spent some of her happiest times visiting Greece with her family, where she rode a donkey up the cliffs of Santorini, enjoyed swimming in crystalline waters in Mykonos and met her aunt and cousins for the very first time in Chios.
Kay worked as a dressmaker in her youth, and later in various positions that required her keen attentiveness to detail, skill with figures and remarkably perfect penmanship (in both English and Greek). Later in life she worked into her 80s as a jewelry associate and a greeting card vendor, which complemented her unique talent for remembering everyone’s birthday and delight in sending them cards. She befriended many customers who would remember her bright smile and friendly manner.
Kay was predeceased by her husband John Mitsos in 1976 and son Nicholas J. Mitsos in 1988. She is survived by her loving children Cary Mitsos of Buffalo, NY, and Joanna Petritsis of Paramus, NJ; her four adoring grandchildren, who always filled her heart with joy: Lisa (Mitsos) Davis, Chris Mitsos, Georgia and Spiro Petritsis, and by one great-grandson, Joshua Davis
