Obituary
Obituary of Pauline Karvounis Zoupanos
Please share a memory of Pauline to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Born in a small town outside of Gytheo, named Strotza, in Laconia Greece (since renamed to Prosilion), the 7th of 8 children of Stylianos & Constantina Karvounis on April 22, 1928.
As many families in the region, they were reliant on the soil as farmers; as a teenager, she witnessed the ravages of war by Nazi occupying forces.
Pauline, along with sister Eugenia (Yiannakos) later followed three other sisters (+Marika, +Georgia, +Adamandia) to Canada in the ‘50s-‘60s. Both Pauline and Eugenia were always grateful and appreciative to her family there and to the city that she called home, Montreal.
She eventually made her way to Brooklyn, New York, where her uncles ran the Carlton Restaurant in the Fort Greene neighborhood.
Pauline eventually moved in with her sister Eugenia and family: brother-in-law Evangelos, nephew Andrew and niece Alexandra.
In 1976, she married +Dimitrios Zoupanos at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Brooklyn Heights. Dimitrios was from the Island of Zakynthos and well known at “Jimmy the Coffee Man” in the Fulton Street Seaport. They first lived in Park Slope and then settled into their home on Bay Parkway in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
When in Brooklyn, they stayed involved as active parishioners at the Cathedral, which she called home for nearly 40 years of her life, and was a member in the Ladies Philoptochos.
She worked as an Amalgamated Union tailor, specializing in men’s suits, a tough occupation which was shared by many of her immigrant family members and friends.
Pauline and Dimitrios worked hard, but also took trips when the opportunity arose. Especially memorable was their trip to California and Disneyland, where they kept asking (in Greek) “how do they do that?” Once retired, they spent their time in both Greece and New York, until his passing in 2010.
Although they never had children of their own, Pauline leaves behind an extended loving family, including nephews and nieces in; Australia (Kollevris Family in Melbourne); Canada (in Montreal, the Kolokotronis, Lambrinos and Drivakos Families; in Toronto, the Chilakos and Vavougios Families); Greece (Sister-in-Law Polixeni Karvounis, the Leonidas/Kosta Karvounis and Zoupanos Families); and in the United States, which includes locally in NY: Andrew and Thalia, and their children Evyenia, Evangelos and Eustratios; Alexandra and Antonis Antoniadis, and their children Veroni and Evangelos; Cousin Gus Lekas; Effie Lekas and Panicos Panayotou; Dr Dino and Eve Zacharakos and Family; and Goddaughter Stella and Athan Mergus and Family.
May her memory be eternal!
