Sophie Vrahnos Louros, a 58-year resident of Pelham, N.Y., died Oct. 22. Born Dec. 4, 1921, she was the only child of Dr. Anthony and Eriphili (Stephanides) Vrahnos of Boston. Following the death of her father, Sophie and her mother moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. Sophie graduated with a degree in English from Barnard College in 1943. During the war years, she worked for the State Department, specifically in the map division. To the end of her life, she still would never divulge what maps she worked on as it was considered “classified” and “Top Secret.” Following the WWII, she went to work for Time magazine as a copy writer. In 1952, she was introduced to Nicholas Louros, who had come to New York in 1948. They married in October 1952 and spent their newlywed years working and living in Manhattan. Once they decided to start a family, they moved to Pelham, an easy commute to the city. Mrs. Louros continued to work at Time magazine until the birth of their third child. She stayed at home until the youngest was in grade school, and began working at Pelham Memorial High School where she eventually became the secretary to the principal. While, she missed the excitement of working in the publishing world, she enjoyed the interaction she had with the high school faculty and staff and especially appreciated having the same schedule as her school-age kids. She retired in 1986 and spent her later years traveling to see family and friends around the country and in Europe. She became a volunteer at New Rochelle Hospital (now Montefiore) where she was a patient representative. She also was a long-time member of The Manor Club, a women’s social group, where she was a regular contributor to the book review section. A 60 -year member of Holy Trinity Church in New Rochelle, Mrs. Louros and her husband were very active in the church community.
