Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Gevas of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2nd, reuniting with his wife, Elizabeth “Elly” Gevas, of 69 years. He was born on October 14th, 1927 to Thomas and Annette Gevas (of Litochoro, Greece) in Brooklyn, NY.
George served in the Coast Guard in World War II and in the Navy in the Korean War. Upon discharge he joined the New York City Board of Transportation (MTA) where he worked for 37 years, retiring as a supervisor in the Power Division.
George’s second career after retiring from the NY MTA, was his passion for community service. George achieved the rank of Captain as a volunteer fireman of the Hastings-on-Hudson Uniontown Hose Company #2, where he served for over 50 years. Additionally, he served The Village as both Police Commissioner and Fire Inspector. During his time as Fire Inspector, he accomplished updating the Fire Code to require sprinklers in all new construction.
Despite many accomplishments, George will be best remembered playing Santa Claus during his tenure at Uniontown Hose Company #2 for many Christmases spreading holiday cheer to the children of Hastings-on-Hudson so convincingly that his two granddaughters were fooled. One of George’s proudest moments was when he was chosen to be Grand Marshall in the Memorial Day Parade in 2014. Additionally The Weschester County Board of Legislators honored him by declaring October 17th, 2017 as George Gevas Day.
George was a valued member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Prophet Elias where he was an active Parish Counsel Member.
George will be remembered by his family and friends for his mischievous smile and contagious laughter. He is survived by his children Thomas Gevas and his partner Wes Hill of Chicago, IL, his daughter Annette Bolinsky and her husband Jack Bolinsky of Myrtle Beach, SC, his sister Virginia Petas of Hartsdale NY, and his granddaughters Elizabeth Bolinsky of Washington, DC and Jacquelyn Bolinsky of Boston, MA.
