Maria Gary Obituary

Maria Giviskos Gary died after a short illness on January 3, 2025, at age 95. She was born on October 1, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was raised by Greek immigrant parents. Maria became an accomplished singer and was active in the philanthropic and cultural organization Daughters of Penelope. She followed her late sister Katherine Giviskos Nonis to Bowling Green State University, graduating in 1952. A few years later, she moved to New York City where she would live for the rest of her life. She was married to George A. Gary (Garifalos) from 1963 until his death in 1988. Maria enjoyed a long career at Avon Products, first as a secretary and eventually becoming a Product Manager.

Maria enjoyed all aspects of New York life, and especially loved introducing her favorite restaurants and shops to family and friends. In her younger days, she was an avid traveler and an enthusiastic motorist who made frequent excursions throughout the tri-state area for family visits, shopping, and entertainment. She was a devoted aunt and godmother, and her friendly, upbeat personality charmed everyone she met.

In addition to her sister and husband, Maria was predeceased by her brother Constantine “Gus” Giviskos. She is survived by her nieces Christine Giviskos and Anne Giviskos Gaisne and their families, as well as her sister-in-law Mary Lynne Giviskos. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Entertainment Community Fund, 729 Seventh Avenue, 10th Floor, New York, NY 10019.
