Grace Dayan Neidish was born on September 30, 1925 in Tampa, Florida. The eldest of eight children, she helped her mother care for her younger siblings. She continued her loving, balanced support and guidance to her extended family throughout their lives, especially during difficult moments.
Grace dreamed of being an opera singer but attended Florida State University in Tallahassee instead. After a short courtship, she married Steven I. Neidish, from Washington Heights, NYC on April 16,1950. Despite some hesitation, she was whisked off to the Big Apple which inevitably would become the city she adored. It was a marriage that lasted nearly 67 years.
Grace and Steve had 3 daughters: Juliet Lee, Rose Ellen, and Karen Sue. Their apartment on Pinehurst Ave. in Washington Heights remained her home from 1960 until her death in 2024.
Following full-time work downtown while her daughters attended college, she retired, ready and waiting to continue her nurturing expertise as a Grandma. Blessed with 5 grandchildren, Grandma’s and Grandpa’s home was always the center of bonding and fun-filled rituals amongst all the kids: Alessio, Daniel, Sofia, Sara & Dylan.
She kept in constant communication with the growing generations of relatives, never missing a birthday or anniversary. And she never forgot a word of her favorite songs. Singing brought her joy and happy memories into her very last days.
Grace passed away peacefully at home at the age of 98 on July 11, 2024.
