Obituary of George Milonas
George Milonas, 69, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2024 in New York City, NY. Born in Watertown, NY, George lived for most of his life in Washington Heights and Inwood in New York.
For Grades 1 through 8, George attended St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Parochial School where he obtained a firm understanding of Greek language and culture. For High School, he attended and graduated from George Washington High School and subsequently enrolled in Bronx Community College where he studied medical services. Two years later, in 1974 he joined the Navy and served as a medical technician at Bethesda Naval Hospital and as a crewman on the submarine rescue ship Kittiwake, based in Norfolk.
His service to his country did not however end there. Upon his return to the New York City area, he worked for the NYC Transit authority. In the wake of 9/11, he was a member of the clean-up crews clearing and cleaning the subway stations in the area. Despite the effect this had on his health, he was proud of this service and was grateful for the support provided by the WTC Health programs and the VA as his health deteriorated.
George is predeceased by his father, Kosta and his mother, Liberty. He is fondly remembered by his brother Argyrios and sister-in-law Lucy and their children Jeremiah, Sarah and Alexander.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 10:30 AM at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Washington Heights, NYC. A brief visitation period will start at 10 AM.
