David and i were in our sophomore year at Colgate where we shared an eight o'clock art class that fulfilled a core requirement for graduation. The only thing necessary for passing the class was attendance, and more than two unexcused absences meant failure. So, it being an eight o'clock, guys would often write the name of their roommate on the attendance sheet being passed around in addition to their own name. When my roommate, George Banitch, asked me to do that for him, I was squeamish -- I invariably got caught when I did something wrong. But I agreed to it. So I tried hard to be as inconspicuous as possible when writing down George's name. David, whom I had never said a word to, was sitting near me, saw what i was doing, and called out for lying. I wanted so badly to challenge him and defend myself, but there was no defense. It took me a long long time to be grateful to David for catching me cheat, but I am. Wish I could say that this incident made us friends, but I don't remember another conversation between us. Of course I now wish that friendship and conversation had sprung from that moment. Thanks, David.

Dave was my big brother in every sense of those words. He was there when needed at a drop of a hat and always had keen insight and advice. His loyalty and moral code truly defined him, as did his intelligence and sense of humor. He was the smartest man I knew, and I will miss that so much. I already miss our weekly phone calls and our conversations on the latest political fiascos.
Truly a life loss for my family and I.

Dave has been a part of my life for more than 50 years starting at graduate school at University of Alberta in Edmonton Canada in 1973. He was an amazing and loyal friend for all these years no matter how rarely or how often we saw each other. For me Dave was New York - whenever I visited it was expected that we would see each other - for a meal, a visit to the Met, or browse at New York Public Library. There were many, many walks through the streets of New York, a city he loved and knew so intimately. His other love of course was the Philippines expressed in the passion for collecting anything related to the Philippines. Through the years I and my daughters so many unusual and curious books from children's books to cooking books to travel books from early 1900s. Dave is a rare bread of a man - a scholar in the truest sense with a finely developed moral center. He never swayed away from that ethical core. He was a great uncle and always had a keen interest in how Sara nd Dora were growing. I will miss him greatly and cannot believe that there will no emails, calls and no sudden packages of newspaper cuttings. He will always be in our hearts.......
