Obituary of Maria Eugenia Familia

Maria Eugenia Vargas Rojas de Familia (Genita) 86 años de edad, nació en El Mamey-Los Hidalgos, RD y residente de la ciudad de Nueva York. Genita era una de muchos hijos. Sus padres fueron Jóse Vargas y Mercedes Rojas. Genita vivió una niñez rodeada de amor en el verdor de su pueblo. Genita estudió hasta el 8vo grado. Aprendió a coser y se hizo costurera. Mujer de fe; era activa en la iglesia católica en el grupo de La Legión de María. El 1ero de diciembre de 1962 se unió en matrimonio a Dionisio Familia Valdez. Él era su eje y Genita hizo de la familia de su esposo su propia familia. Esta unión permaneció hasta el 2007 interrumpida por el fallecimiento de Dionisio Familia. De esta unión nacieron seis hijos. Para Genita su rol principal era el de ser madre/esposa y cuidar de su hogar; siendo así su familia lo más importante en su vida. En busca de oportunidades, a sus 42 años (1980) viajó a la ciudad de NJ donde vivió dos años junto a su hermana Romelinda y trabajó limpiando oficinas. A la llegada de su esposo a los Estados Unidos (1982) se mudó a NYC. Genita trabajó en factorías, limpiando oficinas y vendiendo productos de Stanley. Disfrutaba compartir con su madre, hijos, hermanas, cuñados, sobrinos y nietos. Le gustaba tomar café/te/vino tinto, pasear, conversar y reírse. En fin, disfrutar de pasar el tiempo con sus seres queridos. En 1999 fue diagnosticada con la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Esta enfermedad marcó de manera significativa los últimos 25 años de su vida. Miembros de ambas familias (mami/papi) la visitaron consistentemente como una manera de acompañarla en el caminar de su condición. Ellos no fueron los únicos. Genita tuvo a todo un equipo de personas dedicadas que la acompañaron en este caminar desde las asistentas de hogar que cuidaron de ella en varias etapas, doctores, trabajadoras sociales, enfermeras, terapeuta físico, farmacéutico y amigos hasta el final. A todos, le estamos eternamente agradecidos.

Genita nos dejó el viernes 8 de marzo del 2024 (Dia Internacional de la Mujer) por consecuencias de la enfermedad de Alzheimer. La sobreviven sus hermanas Griselda, Antonia, Chavela; sus hijos Quemi, Freddy, Miriam, Edwin, Jackie y Derly; cuñados, sobrinos, nietos, bisnietos y amigos. Tendremos un servicio fúnebre en su honor el miércoles 13 de marzo de 2024 de 5:00- 9:00 pm en Riverdale Funeral Home, Inc. 5044 Broadway NY NY 10034. Misa de cuerpo presente el jueves 14 de marzo a las 10:00 am en la parroquia de St. Elizabeth 268 Wadsworth Ave. NY NY 10033

Maria Eugenia Vargas Rojas de Familia, (Genita) 86 years old, born in El Mamey- Los Hidalgo, DR and resident of New York City. She was one of many children. Her parents were Jose Vargas and Mercedes Rojas. Genita lived a childhood in the blossom of love and the greenery of her hometown. Genita studied up to 8th grade. She learned to sew and became a seamstress. Women of faith; she was active in the Catholic church and a member of the Legion of Mary. On the 1st of December she married Dionisio Familia Valdez. He was her focal point and Genita made her husband’s family her own. This union lasted till 2007 when it was interrupted by Dionisio Familia’s passing. From this union, they had six children. For Genita, her primary role was to be a mother/wife and to care for her family,which made her family the most important part of her life. In pursuit of new opportunities, at 42 years old (1980), she traveled to NJ where she lived for two years with her sister Romelinda and worked cleaning offices. When her husband came to the US (1982) she moved to NYC. Genita worked in factories, cleaning offices and sold Stanley products. She enjoyed spending time with her mom, children, siblings, in-laws, nieces/nephews and grandchildren. She enjoyed drinking coffee/tea/vino Tinto, outings, and laughter. Overall, spending quality time with loved ones.

In 1999 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This condition significantly marked the last 25 years of her life. Members of both families remembered who she was and consistently visited as a way to accompany her in this journey. They were not the only ones. Genita had a whole team of dedicated people who walked with her to the very end; from home attendants at various stages, doctors, social workers, nurses, physical therapist, pharmacist and friends. To all, we are eternally grateful.

Sadly, Genita left us on March 8th (International Women’s Day) due to the consequences of her Alzheimer's. She is survived by her sisters Griselda, Antonia, Chavela; her children Quemi, Freddy, Miriam, Edwin, Jackie and Derly; in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. A funeral service will be held in her honor from 5:00-9:00 on Wedsnesday, March 13th at Riverdale Funeral Home, Inc. 5044 Broadway NY NY 10034. There will be a mass on Thursday, March 14th at 10:00am at St. Elizabeth 268 Wadsworth Ave. NY NY 10033
