Obituary
Obituary of Penelope Bassios
Please share a memory of Penelope to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Thank you for joining us in remembering our sister and friend, Penelope Bassios. Your presence here today is a testament to the force of life and love that was Penny. The daughter of Chris Bassios and Mary Getsos, niece of Effie Constance, and Granddaughter of Penelope and Stavros Economides; Penny is survived by her beloved brother Paul Getsos and her cousins Thomas and Steven Constance. Though fiercely close to her immediate family, we all count ourselves among the extended family blessed to have known her.
Penny, a proud graduate of Hackensack High School, Farleigh Dickinson University, and Smith College, dedicated her life, both personally and professional, to others. As a social worker at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for 25 years, Penny's reputation for steadfastly opposing injustice earned her admiration and abiding respect from both colleagues and patients. As a proud member of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, she brought her passion to the picket lines and beyond, always standing in solidarity with the struggle for social and economic justice.
Though today we grieve Penny's passing, we move forward with fond memories of her quick laughter, her ferocious loyalty, and deep and genuine warmth. We are all better, stronger, and more loving for having known her.
Per Penny's wishes, her body will be cremated and her ashes lovingly released on the Island of Crete.
Please stay in touch. There will be a memorial service for Penny at a later date.
