Idalia Mercedes Ramos was born on August 10, 1940, in Santiago, Dominican Republic to the late Juana Rodriguez and Juan Cruz.

Idalia Mercedes, or simply Mercedes, lived in the rural parts of Santiago, DR with her 6 siblings, parents, and extended family. In her youth, Mercedes was brave, clever, and lively. She thoroughly enjoyed dancing and spending time with family and friends. Mercedes cleaned family homes and cared for children throughout her lifetime.

In the early 1960s, she met and fell in love with Anselmo de la Rosa, who soon became the father of her three children. Her nuclear family was surrounded by a loving support system, though, as financial circumstances became more unstable in the country, Mercedes decided to migrate to the United States in the early 1970s. After she established roots in New York City, she helped her children and extended family immigrate to the U.S. Mercedes was a Harlem resident from 1985 to 2017. She would enjoy countless coffee chats, Bingo games, and tending to her indoor garden, especially with her neighbor and friend, Ramona Almonte, and her in-law, Elizabeth Villafañe.

Idalia Mercedes is remembered for her vibrant and generous personality. She welcomed everyone she encountered into her home and fed them delicious homemade meals. Her large dimpled smile and witty humor will forever live in her family’s and friends’ memories.

In November 2017, Idalia Mercedes moved to her final residence at Amsterdam Nursing Home. She lived 6 strong years at the nursing home and befriended many residents on her floor thanks to her charismatic attitude. She was cared for dearly by the staff, Nurse Imee, and caregiver Carmen.

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, May 10th, Idalia Mercedes quietly moved out of her earthly body into her heavenly body, eternal in the heavens. She will be lovingly welcomed to the celestial city by her beloved grandson, Christopher Canela.

Idalia Mercedes' earthly life is survived by her two daughters, Maria Margarita Ramos, and Rosa Ada de la Rosa, her son, Fausto Antonio de la Rosa (and wife, Jeannette), her eight living grandchildren, Yaneiry Jaquez, Adalisa Canela-Hennessey, Fausto de la Rosa Mañón, Moises Ramos, Myraida Araujo, Migdalia Canela, Fanessa and Fanelysse de la Rosa, her eight great-grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and extended family.

We will always remember and adore her unconditionally in our hearts.
