Obituary of Carrie Bell Legrand
Carrie Bell Legrand was born on April 18, 1930 in Augusta GA, to the late Augustus Prather and Leora Prather. She would have been 91 years old this April.
On Tuesday January 26, 2021, Carrie B Legrand succumbed peacefully to a longstanding illness.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Johnnie M. Legrand, and two sons, Johnnie Legrand Jr (Big Monk) and Cardell Legrand. Also, five siblings, Louise Martin, Cardell Prather, Augustus Prather, Rufus Prather and Annie Ruth Green preceded her in death.
She was affectionately known Ma, Grandma, Cattie, Carrie Bell, Mrs. Legrand, and of course Sister Legrand.
Eventually Carrie moved to New York, where she met and married the love of her life, Johnnie M. Legrand on August 21, 1947. Together they raised nine children. In addition, they cared for a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of extended family.
Mrs. Legrand had a variety of work experience. She worked in the hospitality service industry and for a judge. She was very skilled at what she did, but the majority of her life was devoted to her husband and children.
Carrie and her husband were well known for their generosity and hospitality. Everyone visiting New York always had a place to eat, sleep and of course party. She extended that hospitality throughout her lifetime to everyone, from Brook Avenue in the Bronx to Harlem River housing in Manhattan.
She loved dancing, socializing, shopping, traveling, and fishing as long as she did not have to take the fish off the hook. Most of all, she enjoyed family functions, such as picnics, reunions, and parties.
Carrie had a close friend who was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. As their friendship grew, Carrie decided to have a Bible study with her long-time friend. As a result, Carrie B. Legrand was baptized for more than fifty years.
She developed a love for Jehovah and his organization and had a number of close friends and family members in various congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was well loved by them and all who knew her.
Her favorite phrase was, “Jehovah Knows My Heart” which is in harmony with Jeremiah 24: 7.
Her love for Jehovah gave her the strength and comfort to endure all sorts of trials, particularly in her later years.
She leaves to mourn, her children, Jimmie Legrand of New York, New York, Ora Jean Robinson, of Riverdale New York, Joan Frazier New York, New York, Michael Legrand New York, New York, Argusta Legrand Bronx, New York, Denise Wiggins and Carolyn Clark of Charlotte North Carolina, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Carrie will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. It is comforting to know that the Bible’s hope of the resurrection gave Carrie strength, and it can give us strength also. Thus, we look forward to the future resurrection where there will be a grand family reunion of the Legrand family and friends!
