Obituary of Brother Raymond Meagher
Brother Raymond Meagher, FSC, Ph.D a De La Salle Christian Brother for 55 years, died peacefully at the age of 74 on 7/18/2017. Born in Bronx, NY on 10/21/1942, Br. Raymond, after completing his primary and secondary education, entered the De La Salle Christian Brothers Novitiate, Barrytown, NY, on 9/1/61. Br. Raymond earned an BA in Biology at The Catholic University, Washington, DC , in ‘66, before becoming involved in active ministry, an MA in Counseling Psychology from NYU in ’71, an MSW from Columbia University in ’78 and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from St. John’s University in ’96, all while engaged full-time in ministry. Br. Raymond was a member of many prestigious honor societies and prominent professional organizations, including among them Pi Beta Kappa, National Association of Social Workers, and Kappa Delta Pi, the International Education Honor Society. Br. Raymond was predeceased by his parents, Jeremiah & Ann [Carney] Meagher and his brothers, Donald & Stephen. He is survived by his brother & sister-in-law, Gerald & Madeline, of Brookfield, CT, his niece, Catherine Costella, a grandniece & grandnephews, a cousin, Mary Schlatch, and other relatives & extended family. While his appointment to Manhattan College covered 24 years in the Manhattan College School of Education before his retirement in June, Br. Raymond’s other assignments included St. Peter High School, Staten Island, NY; Lincoln Hall, a Residential Treatment Center in Westchester County, NY; and St. Raymond’s Parish, Parkchester, Bronx, NY. There will be a wake at Christian Brothers’ Community Residence, 4415 Post Road, Bronx, NY, on Friday, 7/21st, 4 pm-8 pm. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers on the Manhattan College Campus, 4513 Manhattan College Parkway, Bronx, on Saturday at 9:30 am, with a viewing before the Mass. Interment will follow immediately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the De La Salle Nursing Development Fund, 810 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738 would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Riverdale-on-Broadway, Inwood, New York.
