Please share a memory of Walter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”- Isaiah 40:31 On Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 10:00am Walter Miller III was released from his earthly pain and suffering. Walter mounted upon the wings of an eagle and soared into the heavens never to return. Walter Miller III was born on January 24, 1946 to the late Walter Miller, Jr. and Mary Barber Miller in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Walter received his early education in the Wayne County School system in North Carolina and completed his higher learning in the New York City Public School system. Walter resided in Harlem, NY for over 50 years and was always proud to announce his affinity to the Harlem community and his love of his southern roots in North Carolina. Walter had a great love for “good” music and in his early years worked at a record store in Harlem where he began to study and increase his knowledge for all the great and various artists of which he became an avid collector. He decided to pursue a career in law enforcement and was accepted by the New York City Police Department, but his NYPD career was delayed by a call to proudly serve in the United States Army from which he received an honorable discharge in June of 1972. Upon returning from the military Walter was able to begin his career with the New York City Police Department for over 30 years. Walter retired from the NYPD in 2001. The words “protect and serve” were truly words he lived by; he protected his family and friends and served his community for most of his life with dignity and pride. Walter’s much loved past time was traveling around country with his family. He enjoyed short and long road trips, especially when he was heading to the casino to play his favorite game of blackjack. Walter had a great love for history and read extensively on all subjects related to his ancestry. He firmly believed that one must know where they came from to know where they were going. Walter has encouraged and lead by example for all people who were privileged to be a part of his amazing journey. He was biological the father of one but through his life he became a father to many. His sarcastic sense humor and old school values provided insight and guidance to all of the children that he encountered. He challenged these children, many of who are adults now, to do better in life because he believed that they could. Walter Miller III was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Miller Jr. and Mary Barber Miller, sister, Andrea Miller-Simmons, and niece, Chandra Miller. He is survived by his wife, Mary Taylor Miller, daughter, Candice Miller-Brathwaite, son in-law, Jeffrey Brathwaite, granddaughter, Sarah Brathwaite, sister, Francis Barber, nieces, Simone Simmons, Courtney Cousins, Casey Cousins, Marilyn Waller, Chenequa Waller,Danequa Offei, Khiana Kirby, Cierra Womack, nephews, David Simmons Jr., Andre Simmons, Corey Cousins, Cameron Kirby and a host of relatives and friends.
