Obituary of Sophie George

 GEORGE Sophie (nee Dellis), of Hillsdale and Ft Lee NJ, died peacefully in her sleep on October 30. Sophie was born, raised, and lived most of her life in New York City. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children Peter (Sue), Ellen, and Tom (Jodi). Sophie was beloved grandmother to Christopher, Nicholas, Alexa, Katrina, and Sophia; and great-grandmother to Christopher Jr. She is predeceased by her husband George and son-in-law Gary. Sophie celebrated a lifelong love of her faith and her beloved parish, St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Washington Heights. Among her many contributions to her church and community were serving as a member and the first female president of the St. Spyridon Church parish council, belonging to and leading her Philoptochos chapter for over 50 years, serving as an officer of the NY Metropolitan Diocese Philoptochos, and being treasurer of both the parish parochial school board and the parish Girl Scout troop. She was also proud to have been an executive administrator at both the Johns-Manville Corp. and within the NY City Public School system for many years, most recently at Christopher Columbus High School. Sophie was a generous and loving soul who touched everyone she met and gave everything for her family and church. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 1 from 3-8pm at A.K. Macagna Funeral Home, 495 Anderson Ave, Cliffside Park, NJ 07010 and Wednesday, November 2 from 10:30-11:30am at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 124 Wadsworth Ave, New York, NY 10033, with the funeral service immediately following.
