Emma Plasencia Polanco, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026, at 12:28 a.m. at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.

Born on April 30, 1937, in Bonao, Dominican Republic, Emma was one of ten children born to Juan Antonio Polanco, Sr. and Altagracia Jimenez De Polanco.

She married Gabriel Plasencia Rosario, who preceded her in death. Their life together began in Masipedro, Bonao, where they had 13 children. Their life was dedicated to family. Through hard work, deep faith, and unwavering love, they instilled in their children the core values of family, unity, and respect — values that continue through generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 1983, Emma migrated to New York City in search of better opportunities for her family, eventually bringing her entire family with her. It was a moment of great happiness and relief for her to be reunited with all her children. Together with her family, she made the Inwood/Washington Heights area her home in New York City.

Emma was an exemplary human being, a remarkable mother, and an amazing woman. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, generosity, and grace. Her home and her table were always open to anyone who needed a place to stay or a warm meal. She lived a life of service to others, never forgetting those in need around her.

She was steady and at times quiet, yet she filled every room with grace. She was known for her incredible strength and resilience, her sharp wit and astuteness, her excellent memory, and her gift for storytelling. She remembered special moments, people, and poems, and had a legendary repertoire of jokes and rhymes that made everyone laugh.

She loved fiercely and honestly. She was loyal, compassionate, and disciplined, and she made sure her family felt her love every single day. Until her last breath, she remained strong, caring for everyone, with a jovial spirit and deep gratitude to God for all He had given her, especially the love of her family.

Emma is survived by her 12 children: Elsie Plasencia, Hortencia Almonte, Marina Rivera, Natividad Plasencia, Luis Plasencia, Ana Dolores Plasencia, Herminia Plasencia, Johana Plasencia, Rosie Plasencia-Santos, Rosemary Plasencia, Jose R. Plasencia, and Gabriela Plasencia; 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; her sisters Virginia Polanco Aponte, Margarita Polanco De Jesus, Ana Dolores Polanco Myrick, and Paula Polanco Vargas; her brother Domingo Polanco; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gabriel Plasencia Rosario; her sisters Casilda Polanco Aponte and Maria Altagracia Polanco; her brothers Juan Antonio Polanco, Jr. and Epifanio Polanco; and her son Francisco Javier Plasencia (Javier).

Emma was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, and friend. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She led by example, teaching us kindness, gratitude, and to always be our very best.

Even though she is no longer physically with us, she will forever live in our hearts. Her legacy of love, strength, resilience, faith, and compassion will continue to guide and inspire us.

Emma Plasencia Polanco, de 89 años, falleció en paz el viernes 31 de julio de 2026 a las 12:28 a.m. en el Hospital New York-Presbyterian, rodeada de sus seres queridos.

Nació el 30 de abril de 1937 en Bonao, República Dominicana, una de diez hijos de Juan Antonio Polanco, Sr. y Altagracia Jiménez De Polanco.

Se casó con Gabriel Plasencia Rosario, quien falleció antes que ella. Juntos formaron su hogar en Masipedro, Bonao, donde tuvieron 13 hijos. Su vida en común estuvo dedicada a la familia. A través del trabajo arduo, la fe profunda y el amor inquebrantable, inculcaron en sus hijos los valores esenciales de la familia, la unidad y el respeto; valores que perduran a través de las generaciones de nietos y bisnietos.

En 1983, Emma emigró a la ciudad de Nueva York en busca de mejores oportunidades para su familia, logrando eventualmente traer a toda su familia. Fue un momento de gran felicidad y alivio para ella poder reunirse con todos sus hijos. Junto a su familia, hizo del área de Inwood / Washington Heights su hogar en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Emma fue un ser humano ejemplar, una madre extraordinaria y una mujer maravillosa. Tocó la vida de muchas personas con su bondad, generosidad y gracia. Su casa y su mesa siempre estuvieron abiertas para quien necesitara un lugar donde quedarse o una comida caliente. Vivió una vida de servicio a los demás, sin olvidar nunca a los más necesitados a su alrededor.

Era una mujer serena y a veces callada, y aun así llenaba cada espacio con su gracia. Fue conocida por su increíble fortaleza y resiliencia, por su agudeza, su ingenio y su astucia, por su excelente memoria y por su don para contar historias. Recordaba momentos especiales, personas, poemas, y tenía un repertorio legendario de chistes y versos que hacía reír a todos.

Amó con fuerza y con honestidad. Fue leal, compasiva y disciplinada, y se aseguró de que su familia sintiera su amor cada día. Hasta su último aliento, se mantuvo fuerte, cuidando de todos, con un espíritu jovial y una profunda gratitud a Dios por todo lo que le había dado, especialmente por el amor de su familia.

Le sobreviven sus 12 hijos: Elsie Plasencia, Hortencia Almonte, Marina Rivera, Natividad Plasencia, Luis Plasencia, Ana Dolores Plasencia, Herminia Plasencia, Johana Plasencia, Rosie Plasencia-Santos, Rosemary Plasencia, José R. Plasencia y Gabriela Plasencia; 22 nietos y 9 bisnietos; sus hermanas Virginia Polanco Aponte, Margarita Polanco De Jesús, Ana Dolores Polanco Myrick y Paula Polanco Vargas; su hermano Domingo Polanco; y muchos sobrinos, sobrinas y amigos queridos.

Le precedieron en la muerte su esposo, Gabriel Plasencia Rosario; sus hermanas Casilda Polanco Aponte y María Altagracia Polanco; sus hermanos Juan Antonio Polanco, Jr. y Epifanio Polanco; y su hijo Francisco Javier Plasencia (Javier).

Emma fue una esposa amorosa, una madre, abuela, hermana, tía, suegra y amiga devota. Su mayor alegría era pasar tiempo con su familia. Predicó con el ejemplo, enseñándonos bondad, gratitud y a dar siempre lo mejor de nosotros mismos.

Aunque ya no esté físicamente con nosotros, vivirá para siempre en nuestros corazones. Su legado de amor, fortaleza, resiliencia, fe y compasión seguirá guiándonos e inspirándonos.
