In Loving Memory of Juan Alberto De Leon Frias (“Matute”)

Juan Alberto De Leon Frias,  lovingly known as “Matute,” was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Born in 1961 in San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic, to Silvio Antonio Frias and Ana Maria Frias, Juan lived a life defined by love, generosity, laughter, and deep devotion to the people around him.

Above all, Juan’s greatest pride was his family.

He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Anna De Leon and Alejandra De Leon, and proudly embraced Anyeli and Andy as his own children. He stood by his children through every stage of life, defended them fiercely, supported their goals, and never hesitated to show up—whether for everyday moments or long college trips. His children knew they could always count on him.

Juan was also a deeply devoted grandfather to Chloe Delgado, Abeegail Frica, and Raheem Garcia, who brought endless joy and purpose to his life. Some of the family’s most treasured memories were summers spent at City Island, days at Randall’s Island, visits to parks, and simply being together outdoors. More than anything, Juan wanted his children and grandchildren to enjoy life, create memories, and feel loved. 

Juan grew up in the beautiful Dominican Republic surrounded by family, traditions, and experiences that stayed with him throughout his life. He shared a close bond with his siblings: Luis De Leon (“Neo”), Emilio De Leon (“Joselito”), Silvio De Leon (“Jorge Luis”), Ricardo Acosta, Antonio Garcia (“60”), Pilar De Leon, Daisy De Leon, and Ana Silvia De Leon. He was also a proud and loving uncle to his 25 nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He cherished time with his family and found joy in staying connected and creating lasting memories together.

Later, he moved to the United States and made his home in Washington Heights, where he built not only a life but a community.

Washington Heights became his extended family. Over the years, Juan formed lifelong friendships and became someone people could always depend on. Whether lending a helping hand, offering support, or even helping neighbors find parking, he showed up for people in ways both big and small. His generosity and love for his community left a lasting impact.

Known for bringing energy wherever he went, Juan loved music—every kind of music. There was rarely a quiet moment around him. He loved turning the volume up, singing proudly, and sharing those moments with others. His daughters always knew when he arrived because they could hear the music before the car door even opened. He enjoyed gathering with family and friends, sharing stories, having a beer or two, and making memories that people still smile about today.

Juan found joy in simple things. He loved spending time outdoors, watching baseball, drawing,  and being surrounded by family and friends. He also took pride in teaching others how to drive. Helping someone gain confidence behind the wheel brought him genuine happiness, and many people carry that skill today because of him.

Juan had a unique sense of humor and a way of making people laugh wherever he went. He made ordinary moments memorable and had a gift for making people feel welcome, cared for, and included.

More than anything, Juan wanted to leave behind a legacy—and he did.

His legacy lives on through the love he gave, the family he cherished, the friendships he built, the lessons he shared, and the countless lives he touched.

Juan Alberto De Leon will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Though he is no longer with us, his spirit, laughter, music, strength, and love will remain with us always.
