George Vomvolakis Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, uncle and friend, George Vomvolakis, who peacefully passed away on May 14, 2026, surrounded by his family.

George was born on May 21, 1940 in Crete, Greece. He was the third son of George and Despina Vomvolakis. As a young man in Crete, George loved the sea, swimming, storytelling, and traditional Cretan folk dancing. He was known for his strength and courage: qualities demonstrated even in his youth when he saved the lives of two people drowning. After completing his military service in northern Greece, he met the love of his life and devoted caregiver, Stavroula “Voula” Sarzetakis, and were married in 1964.

In 1969, with extraordinary courage and hope for a better future, George and Voula together   with their two young children, Despina and John, emigrated to the United States.  He settled his family in Mount Vernon, New York and established a foundation that allowed his family to flourish. In short time, George established a construction company with his brother Manoli building luxury homes and worked hard to provide for his family.  Within seven years of reaching the U.S., he purchased a home in Mount Vernon and lived there with his wife for more than five decades creating memories, welcoming loved ones, and raising their family.

Soon after their youngest child, Irene, was born and named after George’s beloved grandmother.  Through their sacrifices and encouragement, George and Voula, supported all three of their children through prestigious colleges, medical and law  school, encouraging them to reach for their professional goals each step of the way.   George also established lifelong and loyal friendships within the local Greek community. He was an active member of the Omonia Cretan Club in Astoria, New York, and remained fiercely proud of his Cretan heritage, carrying on its traditions to his children and grandchildren.  George built a reputable life anchored in hard work, perseverance, love and friendship, which were qualities that he instilled in his family.

George’s happy place was in Melidoni, his village in Crete.  He built a home there on his own, and it served as his sanctuary and also a place of connection for his wife, kids and grandchildren.  His biggest joys included spending time there with his extended family and lifelong friends, taking care of his olive trees and vineyards, and socializing with others in the village center over a game of tavli.

George especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who adored him and reveled in any opportunity to support them in their endeavors including school, sports and extracurricular interests.   He also spent time talking to his grandchildren about their greek roots and culture, and taught them how to dance the traditional Cretan folk dances.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Despina Vomvolakis, and his beloved brothers, John Bobolakis and Manoli Vomvolaki

He is survived by his devoted wife and loving caregiver of over 62 years, Stavroula “Voula” Vomvolakis; his cherished children, Dr. Despina Vomvolakis and Dr. George Agriantonis, John and Ariadne Vomvolakis, and Irene and Markos Manos; and his seven beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Stavros, George, Peter, Nicholas, Andonis and Stefani.
