Despina Sideris Obituary

In Loving Memory of Despina Sideris

In her 99th year, a remarkable light quietly dimmed as Despina Sideris passed from this world, leaving behind a lasting legacy of strength, resilience, intellect, grace, compassion and love.

Born in Manhattan, New York, to the late Olga and John Savopoulos (Savas) in 1926, Despina’s life began in the vibrant heart of a city that shaped her curiosity and resolve. A devoted scholar, she attended Hunter College, earning both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees with Phi Beta Kappa honors; a reflection of her lifetime love of learning.

In December of 1952, she married the love of her life, James John Sideris. Together they built a home filled with warmth and an enduring partnership. She was a devoted mother to John James and Eva Irene, guiding them with wisdom and encouragement. Her love multiplied in her grandchildren, Christina Despina, Stephanie Diana, and John James Jr., and blossomed even further in her great-grandchildren, Gregory James, Evan Lukas and George Raphael, each of whom carries forward a spark of her spirit.

For forty years, Despina served in the Department of Education as a payroll administrator. She believed deeply in the power of learning to elevate, to liberate and to transform. She worked into her 80s and later in life enjoyed volunteering at cultural institutions of New York City.

She traveled to nearly every US state and more than 25 countries, embracing the beauty of many cultures. Yet no matter how far she wandered, her heart returned to her beloved Mattituck, New York, where she spent 57 treasured years surrounded by sea air, sand, seagulls, sunlight, gardening and family.

Despina was loving and resilient, incredibly strong-willed and endlessly curious. She read widely, attended museums and theaters often, explored eagerly, supported charitable causes and gave her time generously to the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church and Philoptochos organization. She met life’s joys and trials alike with courage and dignity. Her strength was not loud, but it was unshakable.

In her nearly 100 years of life, Despina observed and experienced tremendous change in the world. She was a witness to stock market crashes, economic depressions, wars, evolutions in transportation and infrastructure, the rise of technology, cell phones and computers and many iterations of cultural norms, values and laws. All these experiences only increased her resolve to learn more, do more and live more.

May the strength and resilience she showed in life be a guide, a teacher and an example to all who knew and loved her.

May her memory be an eternal blessing.

“If you are strong enough, there are no precedents.”

-F. Scott Fitzgerald
