NICK STRINGAS
1938-2025
Nicholas (Nick) Stringas, age 86, peacefully passed away in his Manhattan home on Sunday, June 8, 2025 after a fifteen-month period of cancer treatments that he faced with conviction and unwavering faith.
Nick was born on December 10, 1938 in Hells Kitchen, a NYC neighborhood then home to a close Greek community, to Gus and Anna Stringas, both with family ties to the Greek island of Kos. Following the Korean War, Nick proudly enlisted in the Navy at 17 where he finished his high school degree, and struck-off on a four-year stint that provided him with a life experience and insight that he felt was more valuable than four years back in college.
He is predeceased by his older brother John Stringas, and his first wife Elene (Theodore) and is survived by their son Peter James (PJ), four grandchildren, and his life partner of 25 years, Patricia Schultz, as well as various beloved cousins and family members in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Long Island, NY.
Nick's greatest legacy was the light and infectious joy he brought to all of those he met throughout his life, and from his many memorable years as a popular restaurant owner in NYC, where he never met a customer he didn't like. That gregarious and good-hearted nature and honest character served him well during his next professional venture: selling high-end cars in Manhattan, something that provided him with a new work environment - surprising no one that he was a natural - and a close-knit family of friends.
But he was the first to admit that - following an early retirement - his greatest joy was accompanying Patricia on press trips and reconnaissance adventures for her work as an international travel journalist: with the same inherent curiosity that first encouraged him to strike off and see the world with the Navy as a young man, Nick visited countless destinations both remote and close to home. Beacon, New York became his second home where long weekends were spent exploring the history and beauty of the Mid Hudson Valley when not watching the grass grow from his backyard deck with a gin & tonic, following long riverside walks.
Nick was an inspiration to many, for his acts of kindness and a natural gift of making everyone feel like an immediate friend. He brought fun and life to every gathering and could jump-start the dullest party with his anecdotes and time-worn jokes always delivered as if for the first time. Youthful and enthusiastic until the end, Nick will be forever remembered by every person he ever touched for his warmth, good heart and great passion for life.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 12, at St. George Church in Manhattan at 307 W. 54th St, from 9:30am to 10:30am. It will be followed by a funeral service and makaria brunch/lunch.
